Recently completed: Alberta Street Residence in NE Portland. The home, designed by Benjamin Waechter Architects, is a renovation/expansion of an existing dilapidated house.
The owner wanted 4 bedrooms all on a second level, requiring expansion beyond the existing footprint. The solution was to cantilever the front and rear of the second floor to fit these bedrooms as well as to create column free porches on both ends of the house. From the side, the house profile takes on the form of a “T”. The cladding of the house is seen as a sleeve, as if it were a stretchable garment pulled down tight over the structure. It is made of black vertical corrugated steel with rounded corners eliminating the need for corner trim. It is a continuous, uninterrupted surface punctuated only by the window openings and porches.
